Happy Birthday Marie Antoinette and Giveaway

Happy Birthday to Marie Antoinette who was born today (as well as myself and Leah Marie Brown!).  To celebrate Marie's birthday (and mine), I am giving away 2 copies of Carolyn Meyer's YA novel THE BAD QUEEN.  Here is a sneak peek:

I read a Japanese magna story based on Marie's life. It also painted a sympathetic picture of the young Queen. Meyer's story sounds interesting.

I am a first time visitor to your site and dazzled by your evocative prose. You have a gift for crafting cogent, alluring and informative historical accounts of wild, wicked,wanton, wily women! My definition of a "witch" is a Woman In Total Control of Herself.

All of the women you write about had to live by their wits, in an era when women had no legal or political rights - even titled ladies of the blood were chattel to be traded off in dynastic, military, political alliances. These women of days gone by are an inspiration to me, living in the Third Millenium.

I hope I win the book - sounds like a good read and a rollicking romp - you have a talent for spinning a great yarn - good, solid, old fashioned storytelling.

Scandalous Women in Fiction: Irene Forsyte

I recently watched 2002 Granada Television production of John Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga again to immerse myself in the world of the Victorians. I was struck again by the character of Irene Heron Forsyte, the mysterious, and aloof beauty that is at the heart of the first series. During the course of the first six episodes she manages to enchant not one but three of the Forsyte men as well as stealing the heart of Philip Bosinney, the fiance of her good friend June Forsyte. She leaves her husband Soames, which causes a scandal, that reverberates throughout the second series. Soames is never really able to get over losing Irene. Irene is certainly a Scandalous Woman but it is less about what she does than how the men in her life perceive her that makes her so Scandalous. When we first meet Irene in both the television series she is living in Bournemouth with her stepmother. Royal Princess, Royal Scandal - the sad life of Princess Margaret

It'll be six years next month that HRH Princess Margaret passed away at the age of 71. Apparently her ex-husband, Lord Snowdon has decided to share intimate details of his marriage to the late Princess in a new biography. According to Hello Magazine: "News of the book, which is set to hit UK stores in the summer, may come as a surprise to many royal watchers. "There has always been an understanding that no biography would be published during his lifetime," says royal author Tim Heald - who wrote a biography of the Queen's late sister.
